A Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) enables management on corporate machines when working remotely, and provides capability to ensure the machine is up to date with the latest updates, applications and policy, even when VPN connection is disabled.

A Cloud Management Gateway is a great service to relieve an overloaded VPN connection of all the traffic from Configuration Manager.
